Earlier this year Florida death metal heavyweights Obituary announced a 24-date run of fall shows, bringing along Abbath for direct support. Joined by black metallers Midnight, the tour recently pulled up to UC Theatre in Berkeley, steamrolling the nearly sold-out crowd with an evening of face-melting metal.

After a brief set from punk/metal up and comers Devil Master, Midnight hit the stage with “Penetratal Ecstacy,” and proceeded to blast through and intense set that had the crowd pushing their way to the barricade to headbang along. Highlights included “Evil Like a Knife,” “Who Gives a Fuck?,” and “Unholy and Rotten.”

After a short break, it was time for Abbath, and he and his band (which includes Triumph of Death’s bassist Mia Wallace) took the stage with “Count the Dead,” picking up right where Midnight left off. The setlist included a handful of tracks from the latest release Outstrider (Season of Mist) including “Bridge of Spasms,” “The Artifex,” “Harvest Pyre,” and “Calm in Ire (Of Hurricane).” The band also blasted their way a couple of Immortal covers, including “In My Kingdom Cold,” and “Tyrants,” before wrapping up their all too brief set with “To War!” Hopefully, Abbath will be returning soon with a proper headlining set.

Obituary put on a brutal set of their own, with a fourteen-song set which included “Redneck Stomp,” “Straight to Hell,” “Suffocation,” and “Intoxicated.”

The tour continues through October 25, wrapping up in Atlanta. It was a perfect night of metal, and a tour not to be missed.
