Lights brought a dazzling display of dreamy synths and soaring vocal hooks to a sold-out Bimbo’s 365 Club on Friday evening. Touring in support of her most recent release, A6EXTENDED, the Come Get Your Girl tour showed that twenty years into her career, Lights hasn’t lost one ounce of power.
Flanked by the Tavares brothers, Brodie (guitar/bass) and Stefan (drums), the set began with a driving version of “COME GET YOUR GIRL.” Between slick guitar lines, booming drums, and bubbly synthesizers, the song made an immediate impact. Of course, when you’ve got the vocal range and power of someone like Lights, it takes these songs to another level. Next up was an earlier track, the sweet “River,” from Lights’ debut album. Despite being over seventeen years old, the song fit right alongside newer ones.

Lights alternated new and old songs before breaking into a medley of older songs, combining “Timing Is Everything,” “Flux and Flow,” and “We Were Here” into one massive rave-up that saw her jump into the crowd.
Lights and the Tavares brothers have been touring together for quite some time, and it was evident that there was substantial on-stage chemistry. Even on the version of Lights’ collaboration with Canadian DJ Felix Cartal, “Love Me,” the trio locked into a tight groove.

Halfway through the set, Lights performed a solo version of the moving ballad, “Don’t Go Home Without Me,” remarking on all the previous times she had played in San Francisco since her first U.S. tour in 2009.
One of the most surprising moments came towards the end of the show when Lights busted out a surprise cover of the pop-punk classic, “All the Small Things” by Blink-182. The upbeat anthem was turned into a chillwave-style song, but it still had the entire crowd singing along.

A few songs later, Lights closed out the night with a two-song encore featuring some wicked keytar playing on “Up We Go,” and ending things with her latest single, “EDUCATION.”
For Lights, the past few years have seen her expand her songwriting palette, and this rejuvenated approach was apparent throughout the evening. Based on Friday night’s turnout and crowd response, you can expect to see her around for a lot longer.
