Black Label Society returned to San Francisco recently, delivering a crushing night of heavy riffing and southern-metal swagger that left the crowd buzzing long after the guitars and amps cooled. From the opening seconds, Zakk Wylde’s heavy af guitar tone established an atmosphere that was equal parts menace and groove. The setlist balanced career-spanning staples with a few newer cuts, moving seamlessly between thunderous anthems and moments of surprising intimacy.

Wylde’s stage presence was as magnetic as always. Equal parts guitar hero and weathered frontman, he prowled the stage with a constant relentlessness while still obviously having fun. His solos will always be the show’s backbone — technically dazzling but never indulgent, always in service of the song. The rhythm section locked into a bruising groove; the drums hit with catapult-force, and the bass provided a low-end rumble that made the floor vibrate. Tight arrangements allowed even longer jams to feel purposeful rather than meandering.

Highlights from the set included “Heart of Darkness,” “The Blessed Hellride,” and “Fire It Up,” (with an extended guitar solo) but the pinnacle of the set was without a doubt a brief snippet the Ozzy classic “No More Tears,” an obvious tribute to late Mr. Osbourne.

For longtime fans the evening was reaffirmation; for newcomers, an education in heavy music’s emotive power. If there was a critique, it’s that quieter moments sometimes felt compressed by the overall volume and pace — but even that reinforced the band’s singular identity. Ultimately, the concert was a testament to Black Label Society’s enduring appeal: uncompromising, heartfelt, and louder than life.

Zakk is pulling double-duty on this tour, with his Black Sabbath tribute Zakk Sabbath supporting. Although their six song set of Ozzy era songs was far too brief, it was the perfect way for Zakk to pay homage. By the time he wrapped up his set with “War Pigs” (complete with him ripping a solo) on the floor of the venue, the crowd was more than pumped.
