Seu Jorge & Rogê UC Theatre, Berkeley January 19, 2020 Photos by Jon Bauer Vocalist Seu Jorge and guitarist Rogê brought their Brazilian-yet-more music to Berkeley for an enchanting night of beautiful songs. They opened the show with playing almost a dozen songs together, followed by Rogê performing one song solo. Seu Jorge returned and performed four of his Bowie tribute songs from his album The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions including “Rebel Rebel,” “Life on Mars?,” “Changes,” and “Space Oddity.” Playing to a packed, mostly Brazilian, audience, it was a thrilling evening. Editors Regency Ballroom May 11, 2018 Photos by Jon Bauer. Review by Naomi Elvove. British indie rock band Editors performed recently at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco to an enthusiastic crowd. Lead singer Tom Smith belted out intense and poetic lyrics as he bounced energetically from the mic to keyboard to guitar, bringing charisma and high theatrics to an enthusiastic crowd of fans. The four other band members delivered a powerful and dark yet danceable sound, with drummer Ed Lay as a notable talent. The band performed for a good two hours, including an extended encore that lasted until…

Yes The Warfield September 1, 2017 All photos by Jon Bauer. Dead center in the prog-rock universe, Yes has played with a variety of lineups almost 50 years, some sort of record not just for prog-rock, but for any genre. While many of the members have been touring with other bands, and members from the first years are no longer with the band, YES sounded tight and relaxed, as if nothing had interrupted them for five decades. Right from the start the crowd, with a lot of grey hair as expected, was with the band. Every song generated a standing…

Jack Johnson Greek Theater, Berkeley July 26, 2017 All photos by Jon Bauer When Jack Johnson hit the stage at The Greek, he was clearly among friends. If he hadn’t been, it would only have taken a few minutes to make thousands of new friends. Johnson’s laid back style made for a relaxing, almost at-home show, at least until the crowd surfing happened. That’s for later in this review. Johnson was joined on stage at times by the Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO), who record on Johnson’s label, Bushfire Records. Dan Liebowitz of ALO played pedal steel guitar on Johnson’s…

July Talk Bottom of the Hill January 26, 2017 All photos by Jon Bauer. It’s no surprise when a July Talk show is out of control like a fireworks display gone awry. Maybe it’s the cold of their native Canada that makes them perform like there’s no tomorrow. Or maybe it’s just their love of music and theater. The band is fronted by the pair of singers Peter Dreimanas and Leah Fay, who played against and with each other through the entire set at the Bottom of the Hill. Dreimanas exudes a boyish charm and channels Tom Waits with his…
