When Pixies frontman Frank Black announced that he would commemorate the 30th anniversary of his second solo album Teenager of the Year with a 14-date North American tour (and a show in both London and Paris) it was bound to be something special. Frank is bringing along a few band members who played on the record when it was recorded back in 1994, and the entire band kicked off the tour with two sold-out nights at San Francisco’s historic Fillmore auditorium.
Frank and his band hit the stage at precisely 9PM on January 16th, and after addressing the packed room to let them know that they would be playing Teenager of the Year in its entirety, he warmed up both the crowd and the band with “10 Percenter” and “Czar,” both off of his self-titled solo debut, before getting down to the business at hand.
Frank kicked off the Teenager portion of the set with “Whatever Happened to Pong,” then tearing through the entire 22-song album. Highlights included “I Could Stay Here Forever,” “The Hostess With the Mostest,” “Space is Going to Do Me Good,” and “Superabound.” The sold out crowd loved every minute of every song.
Opening the shows were San Francisco’s own The Umbrellas, and the 4-piece jangly pop band proved to be the perfect choice to bring the crowd in and to the front of the stage early.
