After recently announcing that they would be calling it quits after a storied forty-year career, Brazilian metal icons Sepultura rolled into San Francisco recently on their Celebrating Life Through Death farewell tour, and proved that they can still deliver a crushing set all these years later.

Opening the set with “Refuse/Resist,” the band wasted no time in delivering a career-spanning set. Vocalist Derrick Green paced the entire stage, often jumping to energize the fans. Long-time guitarist Andres Kisser made every song sound even heavier than the recorded version, especially noted on “Territory.”

Highlights from the band’s twenty-song set included “Guardians of Earth,” “Means to and End,” and “Escape to the Void.” Before playing “Kaiowas,” the band brought out extra percussion and were joined by Craig Locicero of Forbidden on guitar and Forbidden drummer Chris Kontos on percussion. By the time they wrapped up their set with “Roots Bloody Roots,” it was quite apparent that the band are going out on a high note.

Obituary

Support for this tour comes from Florida’s Death Metal veterans Obituary,  who delivered a crushing set of their own. Highlights included “Deadly Intentions,” “Turned Inside Out,” and of course “Redneck Stomp.”

Agnostic Front

New York hardcore legends Agnostic Front were also on the bill, and although their set was brief, they most certainly did not disappoint, playing “Dead to Me,” “Victim in Pain,” and “Gotta Go.”
