Earth The Chapel October 12, 2018 Photos by Bobby Cochran. Those of us on the West Coast who also happen to be fans of Seattle proto-psych-stoner-drone metal ensemble Earth got a super special treat recently. The pioneering quartet decided to perform their groundbreaking and enthralling opus,“The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull,” in its entirety. With the lineup that played on the album, no less. The show at the Chapel was sold out, as was the show in Portland the night before. Their last performance of the run was at Desert Daze in southern California. It’s easy to imagine…

The Album Leaf The Independent December 16, 2016 All photos by Bobby Cochran. The Album Leaf, the solo project-turned-band created by multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Lavalle brought it’s soft-spoken but compelling sound to a sold out crowd at The Independent in SF. On record, The Album Leaf is a lush, understated blend of electronic beats and textures entwined with guitars, horns, strings and other live instruments. With the live ensemble, the electronics take a more subtle position and the organic instruments take center stage. John Doe and Exene Cervanka Slim’s September 17, 2016 All photos by Bobby Cochran. If you’re not aware of who John Doe and/or Exene Cervenka are, here’s a quick history lesson. Three successful albums (Los Angeles ’80 and Wild Gift ’81, and Under the Big Black Sun ‘82),…
Boris The Fillmore August 25, 2016 All photos by Bobby Cochran. While it’s true that today’s heavy music is full of backward-looking, derivative, and unoriginal groups hoping to jump on the Sabbath bandwagon, there are still some pioneers out there doing their thing and doing it well. Boris Label-mates Boris and Earth are two ensembles that have been pioneering droney, heavy, sludgy music since the 90’s and still manage to break new ground and keep things interesting. Boris have released a staggering 23 albums since 1996, which doesn’t include collaborations or singles. They also refuse to restrict themselves by adhering…
Monolord The Chapel August 8, 2016 All photos by Bobby Cochran. The fact that it was a Monday night was absolutely no deterrent for the scores of fans packed into The Chapel to see Swedish doom metal kings, Monolord top the multi-band tour that also included Fresno’s own Beastmaker and Austin Texas’ Sweat Lodge. The assembled denim-clad and shaggy haired faithful were dedicated and enthusiastic, meeting the pummeling volume with huge smiles on their faces, heads banging and metal horns raised high in the air all night long. Monolord Monolord was formed in 2013 when guitarist/vocalist Thomas V Jäger and…
